With 1,000 beds and approximately 4,500 staff St James's hospital is a vibrant acute adult hospital and is at the forefront of the Irish health service. Over a period of three centuries it has evolved to become the largest academic and acute teaching hospital in the Republic of Ireland. It enjoys strong links and a formal affiliation with Trinity College Dublin.

The Emergency Department in St James’s is a busy, urban emergency department and has an annual attendance of over 50,000 patients. We provide emergency care to the people of south inner city Dublin Our densely populated catchment is very socially deprived in areas and has double the national average of people aged 65 and above. Therefore our patient cohort is amongst the most diverse, high acuity and challenging in the country. We see and treat patients who are critically unwell, patients presenting with trauma, and all other patients requiring emergency care. The hospital is home to the national burns unit, the national coagulation centre, is a designated stroke centre and is a PCI centre as part of the national STEMI programme. We value a patient centred approach and foster an environment that values ongoing learning and improvement amongst all members of the multi-disciplinary team.

The multidisciplinary Emergency Medicine team consists of consultants, NCHD’s, nurses, advanced nurse practitioners, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and clinical nurse specialists along with dedicated administrative supports. Exceptional collaboration with Intensive Care, Radiology, Psychological Medicine and other specialities is characteristic of the department. There is a high degree of consultant support and intervention in the care of individual patients and consultant presence on the shop floor is used to guide clinical decision making, facilitate shop floor teaching and in the implementation of integrated care pathways.

We have a well-established Registrar and SHO teaching programme and provide a tailored approach to education of our NCHD’s with focus on exam preparation and individual career progression. Learning opportunities are based around situational teaching, daily consultant led patient handover and ward rounds, weekly formal SHO + Reg teaching and simulation training. We have very high success rates for our EM trainees in primary and fellowship examinations. We run an effective ED mentorship programme and encourage our trainees to get involved in our audit, quality improvement and research programs. Our department is accredited by the Irish Committee for Emergency Medicine Training (ICEMT) for core specialist and advanced specialist training in Emergency Medicine. We are also accredited by the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for 6 months of emergency medicine training.
